There are many beliefs that exist about ghosts. One very common notion is that they are indefinable entities, surrounded by never-ending mystery and skepticism. Arguments often erupt between believers and skeptics about the validity of paranormal activity, such as ghost sightings and hauntings. This skepticism has instigated a scientific field of study called parapsychology. Scientists in this field have the complex job of explaining paranormal experiences through statistics and legitimate evidence. This discipline seeks to establish a scientific basis for paranormal activity that is otherwise unexplainable.

The study of ghosts is an intricate one at best. By neutral terms, ghosts are characterized as spirits or restless souls whose presences are felt through paranormal activity. Ghosts are often thought to be the spirits of dead people who once inhabited living, able bodies on Earth. One common belief about the nature of ghosts supposes that they haven't found peace on the other side of living. Another belief posits that ghosts are unaware of their death and therefore linger in confusion. The cultures who believe in reincarnation claim ghosts are the souls of dead people who reject new embodiment because they have not successfully finalized their previous life. These cultures also consider that ghosts have the power to kill living people in order to strip them of their reincarnation, perhaps making them a ghost inhabiting another ghost's body. A scientific belief suggests that ghosts are simply mental energy left behind by a departed soul.

The appearance of ghosts is always remarkably similar in any paranormal experience. Ghosts appear as apparitions in foggy and translucent human like forms. Ghosts don't always appear in a tangible way; often, their presence is sensed through noises and smells or a sudden drop in temperature. Haunted structures like buildings and houses are usually where apparitions become visible. Their presence does not always equal a negative context; some ghosts are seen as protective beings that hold other harmful spirits at bay. Those harmful spirits are referred to as poltergeists, the opposite of ghosts. Experts have yet to pin down a true definition for these entities. They are sometimes described as invisible forces who are tormented souls. In their torment, poltergeists manifest atypical hauntings that include physical abuse, levitations and invisible hands. Poltergeists are often associated to a demonic influence because of their highly volatile presence.

A high quantity of paranormal phenomena in one place is described as being haunted. These places are typically houses and hospitals, structures that were once hubs of human activity. Sometimes haunted places are locations where people experienced great torment or tribulation. Once such place is the Waverly Hills sanitarium in Louisville, Kentucky, where thousands of patients died of tuberculosis, mysterious suicides and intentional abuse. Waverly Hills is one of the most recognized haunted places in the United States. Paranormal activities that existed in the hospital years after it closed its doors are well documented. There have been ghost sightings of a nurse who hung herself in a hospital room and eye witnesses of a little girl peering over the railing of a balcony. The hauntings of Waverly Sanitarium have been numerous throughout the years. When a group of paranormal activity experts investigated Waverly Hills, they contended that there was a definite presence of paranormal entities.

If skeptics are to be believed, there are no ghosts. However the practice of parapsychology and numerous documented instances of paranormal phenomena are convincing methods that discount the skeptics. If ghosts are truly real entities then one question remains: What does their presence mean? Perhaps this question will never be answered, but it remains clear that there is something beyond the living world.
